What to Have Ready Before You Apply for Business Funding
Applying for business funding goes more smoothly when the paperwork is ready before you start. Lenders and financing partners each set their own requirements, but most ask for a similar core set of information. Gathering it ahead of time helps you answer questions clearly and keeps your file from stalling while you hunt for a missing statement.
1. Your legal business details. Have your exact legal business name, any DBA, business address, phone, entity type (LLC, corporation, sole proprietorship), state of formation, and your EIN. Make sure the name and address match across your bank account, tax filings, and registration documents. Mismatches are one of the most common causes of back-and-forth.
2. Recent business bank statements. Many funding options start with your most recent business bank statements, often the last three to six months. Download complete statements as PDFs, with every page included, rather than screenshots.
3. Time in business and revenue. Know your business start date and a realistic picture of monthly or annual revenue. Your bank statements should support the numbers you give.
4. Owner information. Each owner with a significant share is usually asked for a government-issued photo ID, home address, ownership percentage, and permission to review credit. It helps to check your own credit reports beforehand so nothing catches you off guard.
5. Tax returns and financial statements. Some paths, especially longer-term or larger requests, ask for business and personal tax returns, a profit and loss statement, and a balance sheet. If you work with a bookkeeper or CPA, ask them for current copies now.
6. Details about what the money is for. Be ready to explain how you plan to use the funds, such as equipment, inventory, payroll, or working capital. For equipment, have the vendor quote or invoice handy. For receivables-based options, an accounts receivable aging report may be requested.
7. Existing debts. List any current loans, advances, lines of credit, or leases, with balances and payment amounts. Being upfront about current obligations helps match you with options that fit.
A few final tips. Keep everything in one folder, label files clearly, and use the same contact information everywhere. Answer questions honestly and completely. Every lender makes its own decisions, and requirements vary by product and provider, so being prepared does not guarantee any particular outcome, but it does help you move forward with less friction.
