Consumer credit file rights under state and federal law
You have a right to dispute information in your credit file that you believe is inaccurate or incomplete. You may contact the credit reporting company and the company that supplied the information. Disputing an error yourself is free.
No credit repair organization or consumer has a legal right to remove accurate, current negative information simply because it is unfavorable. Credit repair organizations may not make false or misleading statements about their services. Federal law also restricts advance payment for covered credit repair services and provides written-contract and cancellation rights. State law may provide additional rights.
For an official summary, review the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Federal Trade Commission's credit-reporting resources.
Affiliate links
Some links on Capitol Credit Rebuild are paid affiliate links. The Capitol Fund may receive compensation when a visitor clicks a link and enrolls with a third-party provider. Paid credit-repair services are provided by the identified third party, not The Capitol Fund. Consumers can dispute inaccurate credit-report information themselves without paying a credit-repair company. No particular deletion, credit-score increase, approval, or result is guaranteed.
